Treasury futures are where the market prices interest-rate expectations in real time — and they’re quoted in a fraction system that trips up newcomers on day one. Get the tick math wrong on a rate day and a “small” bond position can breach a drawdown you thought was miles away.
ZB and ZN: pricing in 32nds
Bonds don’t trade in decimals. They trade in points and 32nds of a point, a convention inherited from the cash Treasury market. Both ZB and ZN are contracts on $100,000 face value of debt.
- ZB — the 30-Year U.S. Treasury Bond future. A full point is $1,000, and the minimum tick is 1/32 of a point, worth $31.25. A quote like
118'16means 118 and 16/32. - ZN — the 10-Year U.S. Treasury Note future. A full point is also $1,000, but ZN trades in half-32nds (1/64), worth $15.625 per tick, because the 10-year is less volatile than the 30-year.
The apostrophe notation is the part that confuses people: the digits after the tick are thirty-seconds, not decimals. 118'16 is not 118.16 — it’s 118.50 in decimal terms. Read it wrong and your stop math is off by a factor you won’t like.
What moves treasuries: FOMC, CPI, auctions
Bonds are a bet on the path of interest rates and inflation, and yields and price move inversely — when yields rise, ZB and ZN fall. They react hardest to the data that reprices that path:
- FOMC decisions and the press conference — the single biggest scheduled driver. Both the rate move and the tone of the statement matter.
- CPI and PCE inflation prints — hotter inflation generally pushes yields up and bond prices down, and vice versa.
- Nonfarm payrolls — a strong labor market pulls rate-cut expectations forward or back.
- Treasury auctions — the government’s regular debt sales can move the long end on weak or strong demand.
The common thread: these are scheduled events. You always know when the volatility is coming, which means there’s no excuse for being caught oversized into one. Duration matters too — the 30-year ZB moves more than ZN for the same shift in yield.
Tick value and why it surprises new traders
The surprise for most traders is how much a “one-tick” move is worth. Because the tick denominators are unusual, people mentally price ZB like an equity index and get the risk wrong.
A worked example on ZB: an eight-tick stop — a very ordinary distance — is 8 × $31.25 = $250 per contract. Two contracts is $500 on a single, normal-looking stop, and on a rate day the range can be many multiples of that. ZN is gentler at $15.625 a tick, which is exactly why it’s the better place to learn the product: the same rate-driven behavior at roughly half the dollar sensitivity.
Never size a bond position by contract count out of habit. Convert your intended stop to ticks, multiply by the tick value, and confirm the dollar risk before you click. A position size calculator removes the fraction arithmetic from the equation.
Sizing bonds around rate-day volatility
The mistake that ends funded accounts on Treasuries is carrying normal-day size into an abnormal-day event. Range on FOMC or a CPI surprise can be several times a quiet session, so a stop that’s comfortable on Tuesday is a coin flip on Wednesday afternoon. A stop is an order, not a guaranteed fill — in a rate spike price can gap straight through it.
Two rules keep you out of trouble:
- Cut size for scheduled events, or stand aside. If you must be in for FOMC, trade a fraction of your normal size and accept that the range will be wide.
- Widen the stop, then shrink the contracts. A rate-day stop has to be wider to survive the noise — which means fewer contracts to hold the same dollar risk, not the same contracts with a wider stop.

Because bond ticks are worth real money, Treasuries interact hard with a trailing drawdown. A single ZB position swinging through a rate release can move your equity — and therefore your trailing floor — fast enough to leave you with far less cushion than the closing print suggests, especially if your firm trails on unrealized peaks.
