Trading RTY & M2K (Russell 2000) Under Prop Rules

The Russell is volatile and lower-priced — double-edged for funded accounts. RTY vs M2K tick value, range and drawdown-safe sizing.

The Russell 2000 hands you the biggest percentage swings of the four major equity-index futures — and on a funded account that cuts both ways. The same range that pays a scalper quickly walks a careless trader into a trailing-drawdown breach.

RTY vs M2K: the specs that matter

Both contracts track the same underlying — roughly 2,000 U.S. small-cap stocks — and the only real difference is contract size.

M2K is exactly one-tenth of RTY. That 10:1 ratio is the single most useful fact for a funded trader, because it lets you size in fine steps instead of jumping $50 per point at a time. On a smaller evaluation account, five M2K contracts give you the exposure of half an RTY with none of the all-or-nothing feel. When you want granular control near a drawdown floor, the micro is the tool — not a tighter stop on the e-mini.

Why small-caps swing harder than large-caps

The Russell tracks companies far more sensitive to the domestic economy, credit conditions and rate expectations than the mega-caps that dominate the S&P 500 or Nasdaq 100. Small-caps carry more leverage, thinner balance sheets and less analyst coverage, so news reprices them faster and further in percentage terms.

For a trader, that shows up as:

  • Wider intraday range relative to the index level, meaning a “normal” stop is more points than you’d use on ES.
  • Sharper reversals around economic releases and the cash open.
  • More gap risk overnight, since small-caps react to headlines the majors shrug off.

None of that is a reason to avoid RTY — plenty of traders prefer it precisely because a clean trend gives more range to work with. It is a reason to respect that your point risk per trade will usually be larger, and to size for it deliberately.

The liquidity gap vs ES and NQ

ES and NQ are two of the most liquid instruments on the planet. RTY is liquid — but a clear tier below them. In practice you’ll see slightly wider spreads, thinner resting size at each price, and more slippage when you market into a fast move. During the regular U.S. session the book is deep enough for retail-sized funded accounts, but around the open, major news, and the last minutes before the close, the thinness bites.

Two habits protect you:

  • Prefer limit entries when you can, and treat a market fill on RTY as a small tax you’ve priced in.
  • Trade the liquid hours. Overnight Russell liquidity is a fraction of the day session, and stops placed in that window get run more easily.

Sizing for the Russell’s wider percentage range

Because a Russell stop is usually more points than an equivalent ES stop, sizing by “number of contracts I usually trade” is how people quietly overexpose themselves. Size by dollar risk per trade, then let the stop distance decide the contract count.

Work it the boring, reliable way: fixed dollars at risk ÷ (stop in ticks × tick value) = contracts. A position size calculator does this in seconds and stops you from eyeballing it. Because M2K exists, the answer rarely has to round badly — if the math says 1.4 RTY, trade one RTY plus four M2K.

This is also where a live edge check earns its keep. Fitting RTY into a trailing drawdown

The Russell’s range is exactly what makes it dangerous against a trailing drawdown. A trailing floor ratchets up behind your equity high, so a big green swing on RTY that you then give back can pull the floor up and leave you with far less cushion than the closing number suggests — especially if your firm trails on unrealized peaks rather than closed equity. Confirm which method your firm uses; these rules change and vary by program.
