Trailing vs static
Two firms with the "same" 10% max loss can behave completely differently. This is the single thing most traders get wrong:
| Static | Trailing | |
|---|---|---|
| Floor is based on | Your starting balance | Your highest equity (the peak) |
| Moves when you profit | No — it stays fixed | Yes — it rises with you |
| Can breach while you're up on the day | No | Yes |
| In practice | More forgiving | Stricter — trips people up |
Frequently asked
Is FTMO / Topstep / Apex trailing or static?
It varies by firm and account type — many futures firms use an intraday trailing drawdown during the evaluation that locks once you reach the profit target, while others use an end-of-day static limit. Always confirm in your firm's rulebook.
What does "room left" mean?
It's Current equity − Drawdown floor: the dollars you can still lose before the account is breached. If it's negative, the limit has already been crossed.
