NQ vs MNQ: Sizing Nasdaq Futures for Prop Evals

Trading the Nasdaq during a prop evaluation: MNQ vs NQ tick value, volatility, and the contract count that survives a trailing drawdown.

The Nasdaq is where funded accounts go to die. Not because the strategy was bad — because the trader sized it like the S&P and the index moved twice as fast.

NQ and MNQ specs: $5 vs $0.50 per tick

The E-mini Nasdaq 100 (NQ) and its micro sibling (MNQ) track the same index in the same 0.25-point ticks. The dollar weight is what separates them:

  • NQ: $5.00 per tick, $20 per point.
  • MNQ: $0.50 per tick, $2 per point.

One NQ equals ten MNQ in exposure. That looks tame next to the S&P’s $50-per-point E-mini — but the Nasdaq’s point value being smaller doesn’t make it safer, because the index travels far more points. A quiet session in the S&P might be a handful of points; the Nasdaq routinely covers many multiples of that. The dollar range of a typical NQ swing regularly dwarfs the same clock time in ES.

Why NQ’s speed breaches accounts faster than ES

Two things make NQ the fastest way to breach a drawdown limit:

  • Larger point range. The Nasdaq moves more index points per session than the S&P, so a “normal” stop measured in points translates into more dollars of risk per contract.
  • Faster excursions. Momentum bursts and news reactions cover distance in seconds. A stop that looked conservative on the daily chart gets run, and re-entries compound the damage.

On a trailing-drawdown evaluation, that speed is unforgiving. A single oversized NQ trade during a momentum burst can erase a week of careful progress before you’ve reacted. The instrument didn’t change your edge — it changed how quickly a sizing mistake becomes a failed account. Sizing MNQ to a fixed dollar risk per trade

The discipline that survives the Nasdaq is fixed-dollar risk, sized in micros. The calculation never changes:

  1. Set your dollar risk — a small, fixed slice of the account, chosen before the trade.
  2. Measure the stop in points — where price proves you wrong.
  3. Contracts = dollar risk ÷ (stop points × point value).

Worked example: risk $40 with a 20-point stop. On MNQ that’s 20 × $2 = $40 per contract, so 1 MNQ. The identical trade on NQ is 20 × $20 = $400 per contract — ten times your intended risk on one lot. On a modest evaluation buffer, that single NQ position can put a real dent in your cushion before the trade even resolves. Size it explicitly with the position size calculator instead of guessing.

MNQ lets you honor a tight risk budget and give the trade a realistic stop. On NQ, those two goals fight each other on smaller accounts — the stop that fits your risk is too tight for the Nasdaq’s noise, and the stop that fits the noise blows your risk. Micros end the fight.

Volatility-adjusting your stop on the Nasdaq

A stop that’s correct on a calm morning is suicidal into a data release. The Nasdaq’s range expands and contracts, and a fixed 15-point stop means something different in each regime.

Adjust the distance to conditions, then let the sizing math hold the dollars constant:

  • Anchor the stop to volatility — a recent average range, structure, or an ATR-based distance — not to a round number you like.
  • Widen the stop, cut the contracts. When range expands, your stop must too; keep the dollar risk fixed by trading fewer MNQ. Same risk, more room.
  • Respect the calendar. Around Nasdaq-moving events, either stand aside or pre-size for the wider stop. Getting caught mid-position by a spike is how evaluations end.

The invariant is your dollar risk per trade, not your point stop. Volatility changes the stop distance; the contract count flexes to keep the dollars where you set them.

Pass on micros, scale up on the funded account

The cleanest way through a Nasdaq evaluation is to prove the edge in MNQ and reserve NQ for later — if at all.

  • Micros gather the sample. An evaluation rewards a repeatable process, and MNQ lets you build that track record without one fast move deciding the account.
  • Scale within micros first. 2 MNQ, then 4, then 6 — a ten-step ladder up to the exposure of a single NQ. You add size on evidence, not adrenaline.
  • Graduate to NQ only when it fits. One NQ’s risk at your normal stop should sit comfortably inside your per-trade budget, and your drawdown buffer should absorb a normal losing cluster at that size. If it can’t, you’re not ready for NQ — you’re ready for more MNQ.
